Model United Nations (abbreviated as MUN) is a conference held on international hot issues in imitation of the United Nations and related international institutions, based on their mode of operation and principles of deliberation. Young students acted as diplomats from various countries and participated in the ‘UN Conference’. Students familiarise themselves with the workings of the United Nations and learn about international events by experiencing the processes of a United Nations conference, such as the presentation of views, policy debates, voting, and the making of resolutions.
‘The Model United Nations is an activity specially organized for young people by official and civil society organizations in various countries around the world. Young students take on the role of diplomats from various countries and, in the form of a United Nations conference, through personal experiences such as presenting their views, debating policies, voting and making resolutions, they familiarise themselves with the workings of the United Nations, learn about the impact of world events,on their future, and understand the roles that they can play in the future.
After more than 70 years of development, Model United Nations activities have now become popular all over the world, in a variety of forms and scales, including international conferences, national conferences, and regional and inter-school conferences, with participants ranging from university students to high school students and even junior high school students. At the same time, Model United Nations activities are not only simulations of United Nations agencies but also simulations of other global or regional multilateral organizations, government cabinets, international forums, and other organizations or conferences. Currently, nearly 400 Model United Nations conferences are held each year in more than 50 countries on five continents. Each year, more than 4 million students and teachers from more than 100 countries participate in the conferences.
Model United Nations is a student activity with a long history and a wide range of activities. As early as the League of Nations era, there were students in the United States who organized mock League of Nations meetings, and the founding of the United Nations in 1945 aroused widespread enthusiasm among the people of the world. 1951, the University of California in the United States was the first to set up a Model United Nations team to organize Model United Nations activities. Since then, Model United Nations activities have become popular and soon spread to the whole world and are very popular. Many universities and even high schools have set up Model United Nations clubs and organized and participated in Model United Nations conferences.
The Model United Nations is conducive to students' understanding of the United Nations and the international situation, demonstrating their abilities, fostering team spirit, and improving their overall strength. Through Model United Nations activities, students learn international political knowledge, familiarise themselves with the rules of procedure and mode of operation of the relevant United Nations bodies, improve their negotiation skills and foreign language expression ability, and lay a foundation for their future social and global development. Model United Nations activities can stimulate young people's interest in international affairs and train excellent reserve talents for the future diplomatic corps. Model United Nations activities also help to enhance the reputation of the host school and expand its influence in the international arena.
The BYMUN Commission is divided into three bodies or organs: the General Assembly (GA), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Crisis and Specialised Commissions (CSC). The General Assembly (GA) deals with fundamental issues in a very real context, such as WHO, DISEC, and UNEP. Examples include WHO, DISEC, and UNEP. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) commissions deal with economic and social issues. Examples include the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and the International Children's Fund (UNICEF).
In crises and select committees, the delegate usually represents a person rather than a country. Both can focus on the past or on the present. In crisis committees, debate is interrupted by ‘crises’ or real-time updates, to which delegates must respond accordingly. Parliamentary procedure is different from GA. In select committees, delegates follow the GA rules, but may encounter crises; however, these are usually less common.
